What Is EMDR-Informed Support?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapeutic approach originally developed to support the processing of distressing or overwhelming experiences.
Within our setting, EMDR-informed techniques may be used in a measured and appropriate way to support:
• Reduction in emotional reactivity
• Improved processing of difficult experiences
• Greater sense of internal stability
• Increased psychological flexibility
This work is always adapted to the individual and delivered within the scope of complementary therapy.
When This Approach May Be Helpful
Clients may explore EMDR-informed support when experiencing:
• Lingering emotional impact from past events
• Heightened anxiety linked to specific experiences
• Intrusive thoughts or memories
• Emotional overwhelm or reactivity
• Difficulty moving on from past situations
This approach may also be useful where certain patterns feel persistent or difficult to shift.
A Careful, Structured Process
Work involving past experiences is approached with care.
Sessions are:
• Gradual and paced appropriately
• Focused on maintaining emotional stability
• Adapted to your level of readiness
• Guided collaboratively at all times
You are not required to revisit or disclose anything before you feel ready.
How Sessions Work
Sessions typically include:
• Initial discussion and assessment of suitability
• Establishing emotional regulation and grounding skills
• Gentle, structured processing where appropriate
• Ongoing review and pacing
The focus is on supporting change without overwhelm.
Important Considerations
EMDR-informed work is not suitable for every individual or every situation.
Where appropriate, we may recommend:
• A different therapeutic approach
• Additional support
• Referral to another professional
Your wellbeing and stability are always prioritised.
What to Expect
Clients often describe:
• A gradual reduction in emotional intensity
• Increased distance from distressing memories
• Greater sense of calm and control
• Improved ability to think clearly about past events
Experiences vary from person to person.
The EMDR -informed support does two very important things:
- It "unlocks" the unwanted memories and emotions stored in the nervous system from a trauma
- It helps the brain to successfully process the experience in order to help you think differently about yourself in relation to the trauma.
Session Structure
• Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes
• The number of sessions varies depending on individual needs
• EMDR-informed work may be short-term or part of a broader process
We will talk with you and take a history to understand your difficulties and how they currently affect your life. Once you are happy to progress, we come up with:-
- Your description of your problem will include an image or picture that represents the past event
- Your negative belief about yourself in relation to the event
- Emotions and physical sensations associated with the event
- A positive belief in how you would prefer to think about yourself
- You will also be asked to rate, on a scale of 1-10, your level of upset and the credibility of the positive beliefs, as a way of monitoring your progress during the session.
After all the above is established:-
1. You and I begin the processing phase of the procedure using eye movements. During this time, I will be sitting beside you and facing you. You will bring to mind the picture of the experience that is bothering you, along with the negative self-statement, the emotions, and the physical sensations. You will be asked to hold this in mind as best you can while following my fingers with your eyes, which will be moving back and forth.
2. After a series of roughly 30—50 eye movements, I will ask you to stop, rest, and let go of the image (or thought) for a second, take a deep breath, and then notice and describe briefly what thoughts, feelings, or images arise for you.
3. Usually, I will ask you to go on with those thoughts, feelings, or images, and we continue to do another set of eye movements. You will go through the process of moving your eyes, pausing, and reflecting several times during the session.
4. Typically, the images, emotions, and sensations you experience from an event change as you go through this process. You will begin to find that your thoughts, feelings, images, and physical sensations become less distressing.
5. I will then ask you to bring up the positive self-statement, and we will use EMDR to help you begin to associate this new way of thinking about yourself with the original troubling image.
